A Mexican artist who works with light to create installations. There are three installations I am particularly interested in:
Sustained Coincidence | Homographies | Pulse Room
Sustained Coincidence
This is an interactive installation. Visitors walk in the room past the light bulbs interrupting the spatial relationships. A line of incandescent light bulbs light up and shadows are created on the opposite wall of the people in front of the light bulbs. The shadows overlap on the wall.
Homographies
A room filled with fluorescent light tubes suspended on the ceiling. They rotate as they sense movement from the visitors detected by 7 cameras in the room. When one person is present the lights follow that one person like a magnetic field. If 2 or more people were present the lights rotate so that 'light corridors' are made. If the room is filled with lots of people then the impact on the lights are high and they rotate creating complex patterns. However the system every few minutes 'enters an interlude' creating random orthogonal arrangements.
Pulse Room
A room filled with 100-300 clear incandescent light bulbs, hung at equal intervals from the ceiling filling up the room. A sensor with a light bulb detects the heart beat of the visitor holding the sensor. The bulb starts to flash the rhythm of their heart beat, the lights all turn off for a moment and then the first light bulb starts flashing the heart beat of that visitor just recorded. Each flashing light moved on one when the next visitor held the sensor.
The piece was inspired by the film 'Macario' directed by Roberto Gavaldon, 1960. The character suffers a hunger-induced hallucination in which every person is represented by a lit candle in a cave.
