Anthony McCall

An American Avant-Garde artist, who specialises in Cinema and projection film. His earlier films documented outdoor performances, mostly using just fire as an element. He developed and continued to use fire with his film work, but eventually developed a series of 'solid light', using the line of light to define forms using the projection from 16mm film. He reworked the idea when digital projection developed. The light allows spatial and sculptural qualities to reproduce in the dusty light beams and was exhibited at the Serpentine Gallery, 2007.

McCall deconstructed the camera and cinema experience leaving the components TIME and LIGHT. He removed the screen allowing the relationship between the audience and film to change. People could interact and move through the space freely creating shadows and interesting forms.
