Analysing the experiments with the fixings

Findings from the experiments I have undertaken:

The leader gets jammed occasionally, which can also happen when using a lazy loop or the reels but happens more so because the leader is moving over a larger area, passing over more obstacles. It can sort itself out in some cases, but can also break and destroy the installation.

I made my own fixings to attach to the wall and experiment with, two using a single reel and two with an outer reel to allow more movement, one of each had a rougher texture to see what can happen if it scratched the film.

In general the fixings created more friction for the leader to pass over, which caused it to brake on a number of occasions. The fixing with the wood reel worked really well and allowed a smooth moment of the leader and did not get caught on this one. The one with the extra layer also worked very well and seemed to move quite freely, although the outer layer was not moving as much as I thought it would, therefore asking is there any point to it? Probably not in this case. The reel with the sandpaper, caused the most problems with friction causing it to catch in the projector; it could not travel freely into the machine. However, the sandpaper was the fixing that was the most successful with creating scratches, which were projected on the wall as they were being made. I sanded a fixing with the extra layer to give it a texture which did not really make much of a difference over filming for 7mins, however may have made a difference over a longer period of time.

When using existing parts of the building on previous experiments, the leader didn't get caught as much, however this limits where the leader can pass. This could be good as it is allowing the building to depict where the film journeys, but also can restrict what can happen in the building if there are enough areas to use in the cinema museum at the moment.

Metal seems to cut the leader and is not very reliable, however wood seems to work well and allows a smooth run of the film.

In general the experiments ran better when the leader was slack. When taught it created more friction and tension causing again for it to break. The leader itself is delicate and so needs lots of leeway to allow it to run smoothly. The looser it is the better it seems to run however it can become tangled and in itself cause more problems.
